2nd and 5th grade Wilson Reading
Decoding is a huge issue among a very small group of students. Those students are first assessed with the WIST and then the WADE to determine current functioning levels. They are then placed in the WRS program at which point they work on phonics skill building to be able to decode and encode. They work very hard in this group and the newly placed technology in the school is a real motivator for students. Luckily there are apps that are motivating that coincide with the Wilson Program. Students benefit also by developing their own criteria for rubrics determining participation daily. They have learned to take on some leadership skills by leading the group in saying individual sounds, digraphs and welded sounds; which supports them in having a positive self esteem, that may be more difficult to boost in a regular whole group class. Below are some of the students favorite applications.
Students Taking Control
Students develop their own rubrics for participation in my class. They also have taken leadership by guiding the beginning of the lesson daily. I have had students offer suggestions on how to make the course run smoother. I have been concentrating on giving my students ownership of their own learning.
